After we had the honor to play the Los Angeles Gay Pride festival, I have been fielding e-mails about playing gay shows, one’s personal gay, and gayness in general. But one e-mail disturbed me an e-mail by Vanessa. She was perturbed by our use of the word gay in our podcasts. If you are hearing about the podcasts for the first time please go here and hear them all. :) She has urged me to set the record straight (as it were) so now I shall. It seems there is some issue with the use of “gay” as a derogatory term in our podcasts. Tabbie says things like “Olivia Newton-John that is so gay!” and “very fact that she would want to change the channel from a bad ass monster truck rally to Charmed means that she is gay”. Tabbie said these things in irony. Olivia Newton-John plays many gay shows and in fact we were a warm up band for her when she played the LA Pride show! So calling Olivia Newton-John gay is apropos. But as for the other things deemed “gay” that was the point we were trying to turn the tables on “gay” as a derogatory term and use it to point out “good” things and describe them as “Gay”.
I am personally frustrated as are many e-mailers that in the colloquial vernacular “gay” has become a term to describe something lame. In our podcast we were attempting to draw attention to the term “gay” and reverse its meaning. I mean seriously no one would use another descriptive category word such as that joke was so dumb it was so “Irish!” Or that kit is way “black” take it off. If one used any other personal category descriptive it would be offensive! Calling something demeaning “gay” is just as offensive.
In olden times and in many classic movies the word “gay” is used to mean “happy”. I believe we need to return to those times in a sense. We need to take back the gay. In recent-er olden times there was a feminist movement called Riot Grrl. Riot Grrls deliberately used derogatory words for women to claim them back as their own. For example writing the word SLUT on one’s arm held the word up to scrutiny because the female herself labeled herself “slut” and it was not a judgment word from a male, therefore one has taken back the power of the word “slut.” Like the Riot Grrls all of us need to take the power of the word “gay” away from the haters. We at Switchblade Kittens use sarcasm when something is totally fab we say that is so “gay!” using it as a word that means awesome. I recommend this tactic to take back the gay. Also when one does something odd and some one says meanly “That is sooo gay!”, one should respond with a smile and a hearty “Thank You!” as if one was just told they were intelligent, capable, and not to mention stunningly good looking and of course soooo Gay! Whether one is actually gay or gay in the most fabulous sense taking back the gay is the only thing that makes sense in a civilized society.
By the way if you live in California please vote NO on proposition 8 because love is for everyone.
Lets all go out there today and take back the gay, you will be gay (happy) you did!
